King Porus and Alexander the Great’s war

You must have read in history books about Alexander who came to India from Greece with the dream of conquering the world. Alexander is referred to as ‘Mahan Alexander’ or ‘Great Alexander’. But did you know, a valiant king of India challenged Sinkadar with a fork. After fighting this Indian king, Sinkadar realized that conquering the world is not so easy. Today we are going to tell the story of this great emperor ‘Porus’. King Porus was the king of the Punjab-Sindh region. His kingdom was called Puruvasa, which stretched from the Jhelum River to the Chenab River in Punjab.

Acknowledgment of not subjugating Alexander :
According to historians, King Porus was a king of the Porva dynasty. His empire is said to have lasted from 340 BC to 315 BC. When Alexander reached India wreaking havoc in the world, he was confronted by King Porus. Actually, it was necessary to cross the Jhelum and Chenab rivers to enter India. But here was the kingdom of King Porus. At that time any kingdom that did not bow down to Alexander would be attacked by Alexander. On seeing Alexander’s huge army, King Ambhi of Gandhara-Taxashila welcomed him and helped him. But King Porus did not accept the submission of Alexander the Great.

Alexander’s army of 50 thousand soldiers fought :
After this, Alexander attacked King Porus. This war is known as Battle of the Hydaspes. King Porus faced Alexander with great valor in this war. As Alexander crossed the river Jhelum with the help of King Ambhi, he was confronted by the army of King Porus. Historians state that King Porus had Gajasena. The army of Porus defeated six of the Yavana army. According to historical data, Sindar’s army had more than 50 thousand soldiers, while King Porus had an army of about 20 thousand.

Porus’ brother threw Alexander to the ground :
Some historians say that King Porus’ generals rode on elephants. In such a situation, Alexander’s army could not defeat him even after all the efforts. Many of Alexander’s soldiers were wounded on the first day of the battle. King Porus’ brother Amar is said to have killed Alexander’s horse Bucyphilus with a spear. Alexander had never seen such a sight in his entire life. Amar’s blow knocked Sinkadar to the ground. King Porus could have ended Alexander’s game in a moment. But they forgave him. After this, Alexander’s bodyguards took him from there. The historians of India may have written anything but the Greek historian Plutarch has written something else. He wrote about this war, ‘In this war the Greeks fought for eight hours but this time luck did not favor them.’ It is understood from Plutarch’s sentence that Alexander was defeated in this war.

Alexander was stunned by the bravery of Porus :
Some historians believe that Alexander won this battle. But he suffered heavy losses. Thousands of his soldiers were killed. Those who survived and those who were injured. Seeing such a condition of the army, Alexander had understood that he was going to face many more heroes in India. After winning the battle, Alexander arrested Porus. When he asked Porus how to treat you, Porus replied – ‘As one king treats another king.’ This answer of King Porus surprised Alexander. After this he left Porus and befriended him.

How did King Porus die?
Historians have different opinions about the death of King Porus. Some historians believe that Alexander handed over his kingdom to General Niaz and moved on. But during this time his health deteriorated and Alexander died. After the death of Alexander, Porus was killed by one of his own generals. At the same time, some historians also say that the name of King Ambhi also comes up behind the murder of King Porus.
