PM Modi and Speaker Om Birla Condemn 1975 Emergency as a Dark Chapter in Indian History

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla called June 25, 1975, a “black chapter” in Indian history, criticizing Indira Gandhi for imposing Emergency and attacking the Constitution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked Birla for condemning the Emergency, which was imposed by Indira Gandhi’s government in 1975.

In a social media post, PM Modi expressed his gladness that Speaker Birla condemned the Emergency, highlighted the abuses during that time, and mentioned how democracy was strangled. Om Birla became Lok Sabha Speaker after a motion by PM Modi was passed by voice vote. After his election, Birla condemned the decision to impose Emergency and praised those who fought to protect India’s democracy, triggering protests from opposition members.

PM Modi emphasized the importance of today’s youth understanding the Emergency, describing it as a clear example of dictatorship. He said it serves as a reminder of the consequences when the Constitution is ignored, public opinion is suppressed, and institutions are weakened.

Birla criticized the Emergency for attacking the Constitution and crushing India’s democratic values. After urging members to observe a moment of silence, he adjourned the House for the day. BJP members then protested outside Parliament, waving placards and raising slogans. PM Modi appreciated the gesture of standing in silence to honor those who suffered during the Emergency.
